Infant Security

We, the nursing staff welcome you to San Juan Regional Medical Center's Childbirth Center. We want your family's stay here to be safe and pleasurable. We take special measures to ensure that your baby is always safe and secure. We ask for your cooperation to ensure your infant's safety.

  • All Childbirth Center Staff wear a special picture identification badge with the bright pink strip. The only personnel that should be handling your baby or taking him or her from your room are employees wearing this ID tag. If you don't know the staff person, or if you have a concern, call for your nurse to help.
  • When your baby is born, you and your baby and one other person you designate will receive matching identification bracelets. Only a person with a band matching the baby's, or the unit staff, can take the baby from your room or the nursery. We also check the bracelets before you go home, so please leave them on until you are discharged.
  • An identification photo is taken of your baby shortly after birth and kept on a disc until you go home.
  • Visitors in the nursery are limited to mothers, fathers, or the identified banded other, for all babies. If your baby is in the Special Care Nursery, one additional family member may visit as long as one of the parents with the identification bracelet is present.
  • Brothers and sisters of your new baby may visit in your room. No children under the age of 14 are allowed on the unit unless they are siblings. Your newborn possesses some natural immunity from infections, but we still must protect them. Please ask all visitors to leave if they have a cold, diarrhea, a sore that has discharge, or a contagious disease.
  • We encourage you to keep your baby in your room with you. Please do not leave your baby alone in the room. If you walk in the halls, take your baby with you in the bassinet. If you take a shower, please have a family member watch the baby or return the baby to the nursery. Your baby should always be transported in the bassinet, never carried.
  • To provide infant security after discharge, publication of births in the newspaper will be done only when requested in writing.
