Aug. 5, 2003: San Juan County voters approve one-eighth cent gross receipts tax (GRT) increase to provide $25 million in funding for the eventual $80-million expansion and renovation project at SJRMC. The hospital to fund the remainder of the costs. The tax, just one penny for every $8 spent, to end in 2017.

June 9, 2004: SJRMC hosts official ground-breaking celebration for 165,000-square-foot, five-story East Tower expansion project.

July 20, 2005: Expansion project reaches its highest point in the construction phase, also known as "topping out."

July 15, 2006: Substantial completion of new East Tower project. New facility scheduled for Aug. 28, 2006, opening.
